Before we introduce you to the colourful underwater world of diving and marine eco- tourism, it is imperative you learn a few facts about Belize. Hopefully the below information will give you a brief breakdown of the Caribbean and Belize.

  • Situated in the Caribbean Sea, Central America, neighbouring Mexico and Guatemala. A small country, 8866 sq mile (23,300 sq km), 174 miles (280 km) long and 68 miles (109.5 km) wide. View our map of Belize to find out the exact location.
  • Formerly know as British Honduras, it gained its independence in 1981.
  • People are very friendly and polite. Travellers feel welcomed and comfortable.
  • Belize has an anti harassment law, people may try and sell baskets, jewellery etc, but will not overly harass and are extremely polite about it!

  • The official language is English and the majority of the citizens read and speak English fluently. Creole people speak their own ‘pigeon’ dialect as well as English, Garifuna is spoken in the south. Spanish is the first language in the north and in some towns in the west. Other languages are Mayan, Chinese, Mennonite German and Hindi.

    Western Belize is mountainous and jungle and the East is on the Caribbean and has plenty of Cayes for diving and snorkelling. It is our job at Reef CI to combine marine conservation with diving, creating eco friendly dive trips for all those interested in diving and snorkelling.
