4th Quarter 2006

July, August and September

The most incredible experience during July was the sighting of a huge Great Hammerhead (about 10 foot) feeding on a very unfortunate Tarpon.  It was like a scene out of National Geographic!

The Hammerhead tossed the Tarpon around for a while then came up behind it and bit it in half!  Diving with Hammerheads in the Caribbean is a rewarding experience! During August we viewed lots of large Hawksbill turtles during our dives.

It is nesting season and we were lucky enough to witness a large female on her way back across the island to the sea after nesting.  We also had a number of hatchings and are working with the Department of Fisheries to help protect this vulnerable species.  An emotional experience for us all!  Working with Earthwatch, ReefCI completed anther tagging project for conch.  It is a great program for all our guests to be involved in.  We tagged the conch in the shallow waters by snorkelling and by diving the deeper sites.  On one dive we managed to tag and measure over 20 Queen Conch.  Ben, Clayton and Dukes all completed their Dive Master internship and they are all now working in San Pedro.  Nigel also worked very hard on his Dive Master course.
