4th Quarter 2006

October, November and December

October is the month when ReefCI don’t operate which gave us all a chance to recharge and complete some maintenance work.  The island looks better than ever.  April and Bryan our new Biologists arrived and got to work on our annual report which will be posted on our website very soon.  They have also been very busy planning our research and monitoring program for next year.  We completed our Reef Check surveys for 2006 during November and December.  As usual had amazing diving in particular lots of groupers getting ready for spawning, huge black groupers about some as big as 4 foot!

Roland our boat captain won the kayak race from Puerto Barrios to Punta Gorda…..36 miles in open ocean!!!!  It was so exiting seeing him and his brother George coming into view.  In true Belizean style the town celebrated with music and dancing at Walucos.  They won $8,000bz ($4,000US)! Well done Roland…next one is the Ruta Maya challenge which is a kayak race across Belize.

Colin won a photo competition with Emperor Divers….one of the biggest underwater photo competitions!  An amazing shot of a wreck.

Our guests now have the option to stay at 2 local jungle lodges, Hickatee or Cotton Tree Lodge.  This gives people the unique opportunity to have a real Reef & Jungle experience.  For further details visit: www.hickateecottages.com or www.cottontreelodge.com

A huge thank you to Colin (award winning photographer!) for managing everything and especially whilst I was in England, April and Bryan for all your good work, Karen for looking after everything in the UK,  Amanda for all your support, Roland for being the best boat captain in the world!  And Molly for all your hard work and great meals!

And a massive thanks to all of our guests who contributed during 2006. Without our guests we could not sustain the work that we do.

It was another incredible year and I very much look forward to an amazing year ahead.
